屋外に植えられた作物は、雨の日は水やりをする必要はありません。屋内の作物（温室や植木鉢）は、天気にかかわらず水やりをする必要があります。冬のタネつめあわせから育つ作物は、雪でも水やりが必要です。繰り返し収穫できない作物は、成熟すれば水をやる必要はありません。ただし、巨大な作物にするためには水やりを続ける必要があります。
