In order to prevent this from happening, a simple set of steps must be followed; First, clear your entire inventory bar. Secondly, select the furthest right empty inventory space. Finally, only harvest the crab pots via left-clicking. So long as you do not right click, and the selected inventory slot is not filled by harvested trash or fish, your character will not pick up the crab pots!
